How to Make a Gift of Securities
Giving shares of appreciated stock, mutual funds, bonds, and other securities often has significant tax benefits for the donor. If you own securities that have appreciated in value over time, you may owe a substantial capital gains tax if you sell them. But, if you use those assets to fund a charitable gift, you may avoid the capital gains tax while enjoying a federal income tax deduction for the full value of the securities. In addition, giving securities helps conserve cash for other uses. You also may be able to make larger gifts than you thought possible for an even greater impact.
Three benefits of giving appreciated securities:
- Avoid paying capital gains on the increase in value of your stock
- Receive a tax deduction for the full market value of the stock on the date of the gift
- Reduce the value of your taxable estate by the amount of the gift
Consulting your financial professional is recommended.
Making a gift with these assets is simple
Call, email or fax your name, contact information, the name of the security, and number of shares to us at:
Finance Director, Phone: 920-922-7760, Fax: 920-922-7214, Email: firstname.lastname@example.org
We will provide you with all the necessary information for you to make your stock gift.
Receipt and acknowledgment
We will issue an acknowledgment letter stating the nature of the gift, the gift valuation date, and the gift valuation amount for gift recognition purposes.
To make a stock transfer by mail please contact our Finance Director for instructions at 920-922-7760 or email@example.com.
Will and Bequests
Charitable bequests remain a popular way for many donors to perpetuate their giving for future generations. You can make a bequest to us in the following ways:
- A specific dollar amount
- A percentage of your estate
- As a residual beneficiary—whatever is left after all other beneficiaries have received their bequest
Do you have life insurance that you no longer need? Policies that are paid up may be deductible as gifts for their replacement value. Policies that still require premiums can also be used to make a gift, with future premiums deducted from your annual income tax.
Memorial or Honorarium Gift
A gift made in memory of or in honor of a loved one, colleague or person you admire is a powerful way to celebrate the legacy of that individual, while providing hope and a future to children and families living in poverty.
Your gift can be acknowledged to the family of a memorialized individual or directly to the honoree letting them know you’ve made a gift in their name or the name of a loved one.
Please provide the name of the individual being honored or memorialized and the name and address of the person who should receive notice of your gift.
An endowment is a fund made up of gifts and/or bequests where the principal remains intact in perpetuity, for a defined period of time, or until sufficient assets have been accumulated to achieve a designated purpose. Endowment funds supporting our work have been established at:
- Fond du Lac Area Community Foundation
